NEWS: When prefacing the official commentary of the Third Secret of Fatima for its initial release on June 26, 2000, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (the future Pope Benedict XVI) stated, “Fatima is undoubtedly the most prophetic of modern apparitions.” As someone of his theological stature understands in making this claim about Fatima, the message of Fatima has proved to be not just accurate in predicting future world events and conditions, but solidly grounded in the fullness of truth in the whole range and scope of its message.

The capacity of a truly prophetic witness to predict accurately certain future events or conditions is dependent upon the degree to which that source is grounded in the full truth about God, His creations and His concern for human beings and their salvation. Though some parts of a prophetic may concern matters of only a provincial or temporal scope, true prophecy is never concerned with merely trivial matters, as might be the case of claims coming from a fortune teller attempting to impress and captivate an audience.

Rather, like the hub of a wheel to which its spokes are firmly attached in order to maintain the wheel’s integrity and equilibrium, so, too, the weighty historic events and conditions to which prophecy draws attention must firmly attach to God’s revealed truth and providential concern and care for all humanity. Such prophecy can then help us to see and understand all such things in the wisdom of the true light of God.

The Fatima message was given at the dawn of the most stunning of revolutions in the advancement of science and technology. This revolution, with all its impressive accomplishments, is often referenced as a premise for many in their efforts to dislodge Western Civilization from its stable anchoring in the hub of God’s truth and goodness. This world view that was once the common subject of conversation around dinner tables and fireplaces, has now become the object of ridicule and mockery by elites in entertainment, media, education and government, who view it as an archaic relic of a pre-scientific, superstitious past.

Though the basis of this contempt is not grounded upon true premises, from which the certainty of logical conclusions can be drawn, the dizzying historic upheaval brought about by the scientific revolution has emboldened many to feel justified in an attitude of contempt for all former ways of thinking, including theological, philosophical, moral and social. In this intellectual atmosphere, Fatima, as “undoubtedly the most prophetic of modern apparitions,” holds a capacity to recall millions of people back to a renewed confidence in the ever-abiding truths of God’s revelation in Scripture, Tradition and His created works.
