“Come and See” We begin the month of March with the First Friday devotion.  This is a good way to begin the month as we emerge in full stride in the season of Lent while keeping in mind that Easter will be celebrated on the last day of the month. The First Friday devotion originated with the private revelation of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 17th century.  He initially asked that people attend mass and receive Holy Communion on the First Friday of the month for nine consecutive months. The apparitions make the connection between the Eucharist and the Heart of Christ, and with His directive to prepare for the First Friday with nighttime Eucharistic adoration. The image of Jesus’s Sacred Heart is one that contains the image of; bursting flames, surmounted by a cross, wrapped in a crown of thorns and slashed with an open wound, representing Christ’s love for humanity.  The promises given by Jesus associated with the First Friday are as follows:

  1. I will give them all of the graces necessary for their state of life
  2. I will establish peace in their houses.
  3. I will comfort them in all their afflictions.
  4. I will be their strength during life and above all at the point of death.
  5. I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.
  6. Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.
  7. Tepid souls shall grow fervent.
  8. Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.
  9. I will bless every place where a picture of my Heart shall be set up and honored.
  10. I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.
  11. Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in my Heart, never to be removed.
  12. I promise you in the excessive mercy of my Heart that my all-powerful love will grant to all those who shall receive Holy Communion on the First Friday in nine consecutive months the grace of final penitence; they shall not die in my disgrace nor without receiving their sacraments; My divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.

Jesus says, “Come to me all you are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give your rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in Heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Mt 11:28-30)
